Riding Lights Theatre Company

Taking innovative and accessible theatre into all kinds of communities across York, the UK and Europe

Based at Friargate Theatre, Riding Lights Theatre Company has been working to create memorable theatre and give people across a variety of backgrounds access to the performing arts since the late 1970s. In addition to creating and performing thought-provoking and relevant theatre, distinguished by quirky satire, the company hosts the monthly improv night Right Here Right Now – touted as a must for comedy fans – at Friargate Theatre.

Providing workshops and summer schools and running youth theatre groups and performances for adults, young people and children allows the company to inspire and engage new audiences, and take theatre into less-traditional venues such as prisons, young offender institutions and local churches. Stage by Stage (a termly theatre skills workshop for adults), the annual Summer Theatre School (open to all ages and abilities) and Roughshod Theatre Company are just a few of the ways to get involved. Further afield, the Company’s outreach stretches across the UK, so if you find yourself out of the city, it’s worth tracking down a production during one of their national tours.

“Our aim is to create unforgettable, entertaining theatre in response to current issues and the hopes and fears of the world we share. We are grateful to be able to choose work that we want to do in a building we love and in a city we call home.”
