House of the Trembling Madness
You won’t find a great medieval hall housing a bar above an unassuming shop anywhere else in York
Sun: 11.00 – 00.00
Who doesn’t love to sit in a grand medieval hall dating from 1180 drinking craft beer? People love to find hidden places and House of the Trembling Madness is no different in that sense but so unique in many others. Impressively, owner Ian built the bar himself out of church pulpit and repurposed small bed panels from a hotel to use as furniture.
Food is served until midnight because ‘that’s how it should be done’, and the menu is packed with hearty homemade soups, stews, pies, and sausages. It’s comfort food done well. Don’t let us forget to mention the 800 beers and 1,000 spirits stocked in the shop on the ground floor and into the basement.
“We did sour beers and we’ve done the latest beers before they got into fashion. Who knows what the next thing will be but I have to keep on top of it because we look out for the next big trend and make sure we have it in for people.”
