Owner, Clarissa O'Callaghan, who returned to York after living in the capital for a number of years, set out to transform the building by taking some of the design inspiration she’d seen around in order to try and make it work in the city in the form of a modern British restaurant.

Keen to explore all types of Yorkshire food – but bring it into the 21st century – the menu at the Rattle Owl is exciting, artful and lets the ingredients really sing for themselves. As for the Owlet, it has become a little outlet for Haxby Bakehouse, Shuti Shuti patisserie and the Rattle Owl’s organic wines and local beers. It’s amazing what you can get into 1.5m2 of space.

“I think, as an independent business, it’s good to use other independents so we buy flowers, soft furnishings, curtains from the firms down the road…our interior sign is made by a business just around the corner from us too.”
