Costume Hire (York Theatre Royal)
Hundreds of thousands of dressing up items just begging to be worn
Thurs: 10.00 – 14.00 by appointment only
Sat: 10.00 – 16.00
With outfits as amazing as those stored in Costume Hire, dressing up should not be confined to just parties and productions. All the items held here have usually been passed on, having been made especially for a production or have been donated, which means they get some really special original pieces in (including a bicorn hat in its tin box from 1860 and a Wren uniform from Bletchley Park) and cover all periods from biblical times to the present day.
To hire anything, you need to head to the side entrance of the De Grey Rooms, and each item can be loaned for a week minimum. If a theatre production doesn’t need it, it can be yours for the hiring. Go and challenge Pauline, who is used to ambiguous requests such as ‘dress me up as something beginning with the letter P’, and she will whip something amazing out for you. The range really has to be seen to be believed.
“It’s a great job dressing people up, what more could you ask for?”
